I like to sit quietly before the service and pray to prepare myself for the formal worship.

On one of the walls that I sometimes face while doing this there is a beautifully quilted

hanging of a Cross. The Cross seems to be set in a field of chaotic patterned fabric

surrounded by an artistic border. One day as I was praying and looking at this Cross, I

felt that the chaotic field reflected how I had been feeling that week and how the Cross

had been the anchor or touchstone for me when I was feeling flooded by the chaos

going on around me. As I focused on the quilt and drew strength from the image of the

Cross, I became aware that the fabric field surrounding the Cross was not total chaos. I

began to perceive the doves of the Holy Spirit flying around and behind the Cross. And

I began to have a tremendous sense of peace and tranquility; I suddenly had an

understanding that even in the midst of the chaotic times of my life, the Holy Spirit is

present, often unseen, or unfelt, but present in the midst of what is happening. It helps

to take a closer look and to expect to see God’s Divine Presence in all of life.

Blessings,
