Reflections by our Day Camp leaders, Madelyn and Bianca

 

I had the opportunity to work as a camp leader of the first St. Johns summer camp! Throughout the week we explored our theme, treasures, through camp activities and stories along with lots more camp fun. We talked about the kingdom of heaven and the treasures valued there. Unlike earthly treasures like gold or jewels, wealth and power, God calls us to treasure different things.

We learned to treasure our loved ones, family friends and those closest to us. We talked about treasuring our enemies or strangers, people who may feel harder to show love too at times. We learned to protect and treasure nature, the world full of life that God created. Lastly, we learned we ourselves our treasures in the kingdom of God, and how it is important to show love to ourselves. 


I am very grateful we were able to run this camp. It was a very fun, memorable, and exciting week for leaders and the campers. I truly treasure our camp group and the experience I was able to be a part of. From silly games, to story time, to slightly chaotic crafts, every moment was treasured. My hope is that we are able to expand our program next year to hopefully draw the circle of our community a little wider.

I’m eternally grateful for everyone that helped this camp happen! 

The experience I had working at my first day camp was the best I could possibly have. I learned many different things throughout the camp week, and working with a different and older age range that I’m not as familiar with was a gain to my ability to work with children. I was able to learn from each child and from my team, and I am very grateful for all the memories and experiences that I will carry with me. 

For some of the kids, it was their first time at a camp, and we gave our best to make sure they had the support they needed and to make everyone feel welcome. We wanted every child to feel included, comfortable, and heard in our camp environment. It was very special seeing the kids creating memories together and having fun and getting to know each other. Hearing from the parents that we made a positive impact in their kids' life the way that we hoped was heartwarming. 

I hope that, as the community of St. John the Divine, we are able to make this project happen again next year with improvements and new ideas! I hope that this camp can continue to grow and bring more children together, creating a welcoming and fun environment for everyone.
