To me, stewardship starts with recognizing that everything belongs to God. Everything I have… time, abilities, job, money, relationships and even my life is God’s. “The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it, the world and all who live in it.” Psalm 24:1. It’s not easy to do, and I often fail, but I want to have an open hand, not grasping to hold onto things as “mine”. I want to give from a place of thankfulness and humility.
The second part of stewardship is being accountable to God for what he’s given me. Jesus tells a parable in Matthew 25:14 that starts with ….”For it is as if a man, going on a journey, summoned his [servants]and entrusted his property to them.” In the end, the servants who were entrusted with talents and did something with them to grow their master’s investment he said, “well done, good and faithful servant”. To me this points to an active participation in growing the good in our community and the earth.
I’m thankful to be part of the church community here at Saint John the Divine in Squamish, where we can give in so many ways and for the good of our local and global communities. I’m inspired by so many of you who give of your time, talent and finances. I look forward to see what God will do in our hearts and through his church.
