This Sunday and last Sunday the readings have seemed to be all about calling: Samuel with Eli in the temple, Philip and Nathanael under the tree, the prophet Jonah, and the fishermen Simon and Andrew.

What we can see, I think, in the many calling stories from the Bible is that God calls all sorts of people, often quite ordinary folk, like you and me, to follow. We can see that there is no threshold of holiness that needs to be met, no test of knowledge, and no bar for doing or believing all the right stuff when it comes to who is called.

God calls us just the same.

Calls us beloved.

Calls us to put away what no longer serves.

Calls us into new and life-giving ways of being.

Calls us to love and serve and learn and grow and follow.

God is calling you.

Yes, you.

How will you answer when you hear the voice of the one who made and loves and will sustain you always? How will you answer the invitation to “follow me” to see and be part of the great thing that God is doing in the world, in our homes, in our lives, deep in our inmost beings.

Thanks be to God!
