One of my favourite songs is by the Christian Music Collective, The Porter’s Gate, titled Thank You. The lyrics are simple – inspired by a teaching attributed to Meister Eckhart, a medieval German theologian:

If the only words I ever pray are “thank you” that would be enough.

That’s it. In the song, they just sing these words over and over again.

It is beautiful. Maybe go have a listen this Harvest Thanksgiving!

The words remind me of the simplicity and centrality of our prayers of ‘thank you.’ It is a powerful prayer.

Don’t know where to start? Pray, ‘thank you.’ Don’t know how to end? Pray, ‘thank you.’ Things are well? Pray, ‘thank you.’ Things are not well? Pray, ‘thank you.’ It is amazing the difference a prayer of ‘thank you’ can make. It might feel too obvious, too small, and wholly insufficient, but I do agree, that if it’s the only prayer that you ever offered, it would be enough.

Thanks be to God!
