I want Jesus to walk with me.
I want Jesus to walk with me.
All along my pilgrim journey.
Lord, I want Jesus to walk with me.
This well-loved African American spiritual is what I carry with me as we enter the holiest week of the Church’s year.
This song is a prayer of lament and longing, especially in times of difficulty, yearning for the presence and companionship of Jesus along the way.
And I do believe. I believe that all along our pilgrim journey, “in my trials,” “when my heart is almost breaking,” when I’m in trouble,” and “when my head is bowed in sorrow,” Jesus walks along beside us. Does not leave us alone.
That is the sort of friend, brother, teacher, Saviour and God we have and know in Jesus.
But Jesus also invites us into the fullness of love. And the fullness of love is found in both giving and receiving.
So, just as Jesus has been our companion, this week in particular, we are given the gift of accompanying Jesus. Through the palms and gates, to the upper room, to the cross, and yes, ultimately to the empty tomb. Walk with Jesus as Jesus walks with you.
Thanks be to God!
