REFLECTIONS: By Sara Jane Kennerley & Madelyn Augustine

The 123rd Synod of the Diocese of New Westminster

On Friday and Saturday, May 30th and 31st, Reverend Cameron and I attended the 123rd Synod of the Diocese of New Westminster. Synod meets every two years to review and conduct the ongoing business of the church. There are nominations and elections, resolutions, audited financial reports and budgets presented, as well as workshops, reflections and prayers. Overall, it was a very busy two days, but very fulfilling.

The first day began with a Eucharist for over 200 attendees officiated by Archbishop John Stephens, followed by the keynote address by the Archbishop of Wales, Reverend Andy John. His theme was “Recognizing who you are by looking at your past.” He spoke about the history of the Church in Wales, its decline as its members moved from the fishing villages and hamlets to the cities, and what is being done there to keep the Church alive.

The 123rd Synod of the Diocese of New Westminster

A few weeks ago, I attended the Diocese of New Westminster Synod. This is my first time ever attending and it was really empowering as a youth delegate to have my voice heard and feel respected. I was able to see other youth, share ideas, and watch them present resolutions and have them passed. I am proud to be a part of a church community that values all voices and perspectives. One of the presenters shared a haiku about her parish, a simple poem to summarize her church. She encouraged us to write our own, so here’s mine:

Saint John the Divine Haiku

Warm kind hearted smiles
Joyful noise all around us
Breathing in God’s love
