This week I met with my Spiritual Director.

I’ve been meeting with her for the last couple of years. About once a month we get together, usually online, for about an hour. We pray and check in and she asks me questions about my spiritual life, about where I see God in my experiences and circumstances.

Between meetings, I know that she prays for me, something that I so appreciate.

For me, the practice of spiritual direction has become an invaluable part of my spiritual life, keeping me grounded and centred. Because it is a regular practice, I don’t just use it when things are difficult or hard. It is rather like brushing and flossing regularly, keeping me spiritually healthy.

I do not write this to convince you to get a spiritual director, though if you are interested, please do come speak with me about it. Rather, it is to remind us that regular habits and rhythms are the most helpful for our health and well-being – the preventative as opposed to the reactive (works both for dental and spiritual hygiene).

What are your rhythms and practices that help maintain your spiritual health and hygiene? What rhythms or practices might you be curious to try out, now, when things might be OK so that you can have them when times are difficult?

Thanks be to God!
