The first hymn is for Ruth Fenton
This was one of Ruth's favourite hymns and she could often be heard humming it while polishing the brass or doing other Altar Guild work.
The second hymn is from David Hildreth: "What a Friend We Have in Jesus
From the time my mother read us bed time stories, and then my parents started my sister and myself in Sunday school- we learned to sing - "What a friend we have in Jesus"- then it became our turn to teach our children and now our great grandchildren this hymn. Then Cameron urged me to get on my iPhone, the app- Day by Day- and amazingly the first chapter I read said: say daily " I trust you Lord Jesus- my Friend".
The third hymn is from Rita Carey: "One Bread, One Body"
I chose "One Bread, One Body" because it always reminds me that there are people of all kinds, in all places, worshipping God and taking the bread & wine, in Jesus' name, just as we are. We are all together in our faith. It is a comforting thought.
The fourth hymn is from Simon Charles: "Eat this Bread, Drink this Cup"
"I can sometimes get caught up in the complexity of different issues -theology, how our faith should impact our politics, how to address social challenges, etc. Anyone who knows me knows that it's only a matter of time before I refer to some podcast or something I've just listened to about some issue or another. However, when I come to church, the Lord's Supper grounds me. It's tangible. I am reminded that I am a broken human in need of God's grace and mercy. This hymn speaks to me of this. I am reminded that Jesus spoke to his disciples and gave these simple commands and that he asks the same of me. Eat this Bread Simon, take this cup Simon. Come to me and you will not thirst or be hungry."
The fifth hymn is from Wayne Kennedy: "Break Bread Upon our Knees"
A very well-known Communion Hymn….listen to the words of this Hymn….I remember well in Saskatoon when our family with daughters ages.. 7,9,10 …took our first family Communion together with this Hymn playing! Music is Spiritual…playing familiar Hymns that are touching to the congregation is a very good idea! Repeating favourite Bible verses and listening to favourite Hymns … touches our hearts….it is just the way we are made..!
The sixth hymn is from Simon Charles: "Yours Be the Glory, Risen, Conquering Son"
"To be honest, I just love the tune. I like to imagine myself singing it along with a really powerful organ in a beautiful old cathedral. :)"
