At General Synod this summer (the every-3-year gathering of the Anglican Church of Canada), the Anglican Church of Canada adopted a new Feast, a “Major” feast, the Feast of the Creator. This Feast will be celebrated on September 1st with the option to transfer it to a Sunday within the Season of Creation.
For over a thousand years the Orthodox Church has celebrated a Feast on September 1st to mark God’s original acts of creation. So, this is both a very new and a very old Feast.
I am so excited that the cycle of the Church year, the rhythm of feasts, fasts and seasons that we flow through, helping to shape our spiritual lives, is becoming even richer.
Among other things, it provides a wonderful beginning to the relatively new, ecumenical Season of Creation that begins September 1st and ends on the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi on October 4th.
As we enter into this season through the gates of this Feast, way we give thanks for God’s goodness and creativity reflected in the good creation. May we celebrate God’s first self-giving act of love as Maker of heaven and Earth.
Thanks be to God (the Creator)!
